Mixed Bag Vol. Who Knows?

Caitlin stayed over a couple of weeks ago and one afternoon, our helpers flung her into my bedroom and she, of course, was pleased to investigate Godma’s room – to see what goodies she could ransack. Needless to say, she got bored of my Gene Simmons doll, the mini Rubik’s cube and even the Beauty and the Beast DVD. Now, I love my god-daughter but without any ammunition, I had no clue what to do with this child.

So, we played dress up.

A hair-clip ingeniously held my short skirt together, she chose the purse, I chose the accessories and off she went to wake Gammy and Grampa.

drink

I have a new favourite drink at Charlie’s (which for some reason, I’ve eaten at, like, 4 times in the last 3 weeks. It’s called Kopparberg, from the town proper in Sweden, and there are different flavours – the Pear rocks. (Wiki tells me this is the number one selling pear cider in the world!) It’s really good, give it a go – if you can’t remember the name when you get there, just ask for the “pear cider”. It comes in a can.

I have also managed to get my hands on a copy of Gleaming The Cube. Oh, the days when I was in love with Christian (Slater, at the time, not Bale), when skateboards were the rage, when Tony Hawk didn’t have video games… (Sidenote, I love how in this movie, Tony Hawk is in it and puts a Tony Hawk sticker on the plane window).

Here’s to yesterday.

My worlds collide! Zack and Miri Make A Porno

Kevin Smith and the Apatow crew. Goodness me. I was really excited when I first heard about this movie (anything to wash away the Jersey Girl foul aftertaste from my mouth) – because the combination of Seth Rogen (a still chubby Seth Rogen, that is) and Kevin Smith is too much to bear.

So, finally managed to catch it – till then, I had only watched the trailer and watching it was like catching up with familiar, old friends. Jeff Anderson (Randal!) was fantastic and I kept waiting for him to jump on the Star Wars conversation – and of course, Jason Mewes (“Let us fuck“) really brought on the urge to watch Clerks (“I’m not even supposed to be here today!“) and Mallrats (“Fly, fat ass, fly!“).

And then you got familiar faces from the force that is Apatow. I love that chubby guys (the awkward ones) have been given the license to be cool. To recognise the loser within and to not give a shit. Makes movie going so much more realistic instead of trying to identify with the tall, blonde heroine having a bad day.

I say this all the time and will keep saying it. I love movies that have the same band of actors. Whether its the Adam Sandler crew, the Will Farrell crew or the Apatow bunch, it makes you feel so much more happy and comfortable.

I also want to make a special mention of the good soundtrack – nice mix going on there and fabulous final song, “I Love You” from the Climax Blues Band. Reminds me of the movie Loser, where the final song was “No Myth” from Michael Penn.

Yes, I know it’s a little late for me to be reviewing this movie (it’s not really a review, so to speak, more like a post of elation). Youtube trailer attached!

Mind-blowing Entourage ep.

In a truly spectacular episode of Entourage (Season 5, “Return to Queens Boulevard“) – I went from laughter to worry to shock to wowed. I have to say I was legitimately wondering if Vince’s career could ever be revived and BAM – he fires E.

Talk about a turn of events. E takes it like a man, tells Vince to fuck off and leaves. I couldn’t be more proud. And the final whammer comes in the form of a phone call from Martin Scorcese (how awesome are the cameos this season) who offers Vince a lead in his next movie. Too hot for words! Entourage kicks ass.

A Mixed Bag.

Quite a couple of things going on in this one – firstly, I would like to refer to an earlier post Of Designers and Art Directors and fine print that my beloved Weicong was never included in my description of anti-establishment designers.

I praise myself for having a salad today for lunch. I reproach myself for having a whole Crunchie bar after.

onlyyou

I am ridiculously excited that an old movie, Only You is on HBO. It stars Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. and is as hilarious now as it was before.

I was listening to Mary J. Blige’s “Just Fine“, basically to break the Aimee Mann playlist that has been plaguing me with pits of depression. So, I blasted Just Fine and danced around like a buffoon. It also got me thinking of what a nice cover “Growing Pains” is and so added a few more covers I like.

growingpains

I love the way the J forms the B in her name – smart, simple typography.

modestmouse

I love that the title of the album is followed with, “by Modest Mouse” – it makes it seem more than just a music album, almost a narrative and a story. And once you get in it, it is just that. I love Modest Mouse and I love the clean typography on this album.

nocodeI have always loved Pearl Jam covers and experimental CD formats but this is one of my favourites cos it’s so random and came with this series of cards.

shins

The Shins – I prefer this album to their others which had more a vector feel, which dated quickly. This one factors in a quirk value that definitely spans time.

Added: Ben Lee’s “Awake Is The New Sleep” – I love organic design; design that has been conceptualised and realised without the use of the computer.

Within this year, I have pushed ideas aside that would require tedious photography in favour of quick fixes as time is of the essence. Time always seems to be of the essence, how wonderful it would be when design is of the essence.
