Apatow returns!

Judd Apatow returns with one of my all time favourite cast and new addition Adam Sandler (Judd, you have to stop doing this to me…) – his wife Leslie Mann and his 2 kids (you caught them in Knocked Up) show up again and Eric Bana is new, playing (who knew!) an Australian. Watch the trailer for Leslie Mann trying to pull off the Australian accent, bloody hilarous.

I’m gonna get my tickets, yo!

Sidenote: I gotta stop posting about movies and TV. I need to get a life (can someone tell me what that looks like?)

United States of Tara

us_tara

My latest favourite show would have to be United States of Tara. Showtime scored with Weeds for me, so I gave Tara a trial and was pleasantly surprised.

Created by Diablo Cody (of Juno fame, how can you go wrong?) and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, this show is quirky, interesting and gives you an insight (albeit entertainment version) into multiple personalities. I generally like shows that let you peek into different worlds (see: Big Love for polygamy, Entourage for Hollywood and Weeds for surburban drug dealing).

Tara definitely lets you into their world – although it’s slightly unbelievable how everyone in their family has accepted Tara’s condition (played brilliantly by Toni Collette). Buck would have  to be my favourite character.

A shitload more interesting than that crap Heroes, Lost or Prison Break. I am however, interested to know how they plan to continue the series past season 1.

Catch the first episode here.

Big Love is one nutty show.

biglove

So, Season 3 of Big Love is up to episode 7 now and sweet lord, they have really outdone themselves. Every episode is jaw dropping with a surprise around the corner. More than once, I’ve gasped aloud on the train with surprise plot developments. At every episode, I keep saying to myself, “This is one nutty show”.

To me, the star is Chloe Sevigny – whom I’ve always loved and shines in her role as Nicki – playing a character that is completely not her and playing it well. I’ve never been a fan of Bill Paxton – but he’s passable in this show and not really a drawing factor to me. This season, they’ve taken the relationships between the sister wives to a whole new level and showcases the intricacy of their relationships.

Love, love, love Big Love.

Added: pics of Chloe Sevigny for Uniqlo – you can really see her dramatic transformation to play Nicki.

I am quite nutty for Simon Pegg.

simon-pegg

Ok, this is my second post on Simon Pegg, which shows my obsession runs a little deep. I find him ridiculously cute and the big draw is, of course, is that he’s good at what he does. I think he has excellent comedic timing and I love his complete English-ness. That’s right. English-ness. He’s not wildly good looking (I’ve never mooned over Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise) but has a sweetness of face and just enough quirk to make him visually appealing. I like it.

I’ve finally caught up on How To Lose Friends and Alienate People – great movie, 2 thumbs up. I love Kirsten Dunst as well (from Little Women to now, I think she’s a really good actress) and there are so many great lines in this movie. Not to mention a Chihuahua. Really good movie, please try and rent it.

Airline staff: Have you got any baggage?
Sidney Young: Plenty.

Side note:

It’s not that I hate happy ending movies. I love romantic, happy movies but I like it when it’s packaged and presented without pretense. A movie like Slumdog Millionaire wrapped up a ludicrously happy ending with a dark, heavy coat they quickly discarded. I guess I like my movies with boundaries. I also don’t like death creeping up on me (see: The Notebook, City of Angels, Message in a Bottle). Just package it accordingly, that’s all I’m asking.

(un)happy endings

My cynical heart cannot take 2 happy ending movies in one weekend.

Slumdog Millionaire

Big whoop, Oscar buzz, “feel good movie of the year”. To me, the happy ending and god-help-me dancing credit scene completely negated the serious topics of the movie and the vivid representation of slum living in India. The best part of the movie was the introduction scene and MUSIC. The music was brilliant. Other than that, I was hoping someone would die or lose a foot or something… Denied.

He’s Just Not That Into You

Ok, this seemed like a good idea at the time. Dinner with the girls and a chick flick after. It started out well enough and some parts did resonate with things girls/guys do but overall, Ginnifer Goodwin (love her in Big Love) played a character that was over the top Loser. I’ve known some loser girls in my life and none of them have chalked up the loser credits like she has. Jennifer Connolly looked beautiful and of course, Kevin Connolly (oh, my sweetheart) looked gorgeous but played a rather character-ambivalent role – a bit of a dick initially, to a cuddle monkey… just kinda weird role. The movie was entertaining enough for a Sunday night.

My next movie is going to be The Reader. Nazis, Germans and Jews – I do not foresee a happy ending there. Can’t wait.
